About the Whitney Museum of American Art

The Whitney Museum of American Artwork was the first museum to feature artwork from living artists in New York, and consistently showcases artwork created within the year it is featured. It was Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney that made the Whitney Museum of American artwork possible, as she was an advocate for artists at the start of the twentieth century. She owned a vast collection of artwork from current artists at the time, and her collections eventually founded the museum in 1930.
